Thorold proud to be "Canada’s Canal City", has one of the few authentic canal
downtown areas remaining in Canada. The Welland Canal currently in operation is
the fourth to be built and during the shipping season, one can watch the
remarkable passage of ocean and lake bound vessels through the lift bridge, twin
flight locks or the super canal flight lock from many viewing areas within the
community. For a great view of the historic second Welland Canal, follow the
Merritt Trail which runs along its route through the City. As you familiarize
